O Pai Natal foi inventado pela Coca-Cola ?

Desde que o Hugo Chávez decidiu banir o Pai Natal das repartições venezuelanas alegando que o mesmo era uma manifestação do imperialismo cultural americano, surgiram nos jornais várias referências ao facto de que o Pai Natal é uma invenção da Coca-Cola.

Ora, acontece que esta 'verdade' é um mito urbano.

A Coca-Cola lançou as primeiras campanhas publicitárias utilizando a figura do Pai Natal nos anos 30. A actual imagem gráfica do Pai Natal começou a desenvolver-se no início do séc. XIX e assumiu a sua forma definitiva no final desse século.

O Pai Natal amigo das crianças e distribuidor de prendas tem a sua origem num período ainda mais recuado.

S. Nicolau de Myra, a.k.a. S. Nicolau de Bari, viveu no séc. IV e foi Bispo de Myra. A tradição atribui à sua intercepção a ressurreição de 3 crianças que tinham sido brutalmente assassinados. O santo terá, igualmente, atirado pela janela de uma casa sacos de ouro que viriam a constitur o dote das jovens residentes. A intervenção de S. Nicolau evitou que o pai, vítima da ruína financeira, vendesse as jovens.

O culto de S. Nicolau propagou-se pela Europa Central e chegou ao Novo Mundo na 2ª metade do séc. XVIII com os primeiros colonos holandeses. A figura do Pai Natal foi transformada em personagem de poemas e novelas, tendo a sua lenda adquirido, nesse período, algumas das características - o fato vermelho, as renas, os duendes, ... - que hoje nos são familiares.

A festa de S. Nicolau celebra-se no dia 6 de Dezembro.

Dia 11 de Fevereiro de 2007, Dia de Nossa Senhora de Lurdes

O Sr. Presidente da República decidiu convocar o referendo sobre o aborto para dia 11 de Fevereiro de 2007, 6.º Domingo do Tempo Comum e dia de Nossa Senhora de Lourdes.

O Sr. Presidente da República, apesar de se recordar ainda do anterior referendo (!), considera que a realização do mesmo não impediu que "o debate sobre a despenalização da interrupção voluntária da gravidez permanecesse na ordem do dia, constituindo um tema que recorrentemente é objecto de discussão no plano político, nos meios de comunicação social e no seio da sociedade civil."

Que argumento tão pobrezinho ! O sr. Presidente da República subordina a sua posição sobre esta matéria às campanhas mediáticas da esquerda radical e dos seus aliados nos media (este argumento poderá ser invocado no futuro em relação a todas os items da agenda 'cultural' da extrema-esquerda).

E mais uma vez o PR desempenha o papel que o Governo do PS lhe atribui na gigantesca campanha de marketing em que se tornou a governação socialista.

E pensar que Eu votei nele...

The fact that the majority of the population of this country is Muslim is a significant element in the life of society, which the State cannot fail to take into account, yet the Turkish Constitution recognizes every citizen’s right to freedom of worship and freedom of conscience...

O aborto "em condições higiénicas"...

Planned Parenthood of Australia's website includes consent forms that list 12 serious complications from a first trimester abortion (not counting the risks of anesthesia). It says that some complications include: "infections ... a tear in the cervix that may require stitches ... incompetent cervix/stenosed cervix (too tight or too loose cervix which may impair future fertility), Asherman's syndrome (cessation of periods and adhesions in uterus that may impair future fertility), depression or mood disturbance, suicide. ..."

Although the consent forms do not say so, infection and a damaged cervix are recognized risk factors for premature birth. Impaired fertility – which causes women to have few or no children – is a known risk factor for breast cancer.

Mais evidência de que o estudo da Lancet não é credível

A evolução do número de mortes (das mães) por aborto nos EUA é exactamente oposta àquela que o estudo da Lancet prevê:

"...facts in the United States don't validate [The Lancet] conclusion.

The National Center for Heath Statistics reveals that before 1941, there were over 1,400 abortion-related deaths. Yet after Penicillin became available to control infections, the number of deaths was reduced in the 1950's to approximately 250 per year. By 1966, with abortion still illegal in all states, the number of deaths had dropped steadily to 120 and was at just 25 when abortion was legalized nationwide in 1973.

Statistics from the agency afterwards show that the number of abortion deaths rose in 1974 and 1975, despite abortion's legality..."

Esta evolução do número de mortes (das mães) é explicada pelo aparecimento e vulgarização de novos e melhores antibióticos e pela existência de melhores cuidados de saúde. Parece ser este o factor essencial que determina o número de mortes (das mães); não é a liberalização ou proibição do aborto.

Por outro lado, a liberalização do aborto, nomeadamente da pílula abortiva, tem sido responsável por várias mortes:

"In the United States alone, seven women have died in the last few years form using the dangerous RU 486 abortion drug. The Food and Drug Administration indicates more than 950 women reported complications from using it with many requiring hospitalization, blood transfusions, and even emergency surgery to complete a botched abortion."

Encontram-se também bem documentado os efeitos negativos do aborto sobre a saúde mental das mães: depressão, tendências suícidas, consumo de alcóol e drogas.

Estudo da Lancet sobre o aborto é pouco credível

O estudo do Lancet que refere que 68.000 mulheres morrem anualmente devido ao aborto clandestino e que a defende que a liberalização do aborto está associada a uma redução do número de mortes (das mães, é claro), não é credível visto que:

• É baseado em extrapolações: "Dr Singh's "findings" were not factual data established by research, but guesses extrapolated from estimates.";
  
  
• As principais conclusões são colocadas em causa pela experiência Polaca: "Poland, which imposed new legal restrictions on abortion in the mid 1990s ... consequently showed improved maternal and infant health.".

Por outro lado, as credenciais da autora do estudo não são propriamente as mais adequadas: "The author of this story works for one of the most wealthy and politically powerful pro-abortion lobby groups in the world, the Wall Street-based Guttmacher Institute. The "research" was funded by the Hewlett Foundation, a notoriously pro-abortion body.".

Desde o início que o movimento pró-aborto inflaciona os números de mortes provocados pelo aborto clandestino. Esta é, aliás, uma táctiva deliberada, como conta o "Rei do Aborto", o Dr. Bernard Nathanson.

Ao ler a recente Nota Pastoral sobre a Lei da Procriação Medicamente Assistida"Isto restringe o âmbito da legitimidade moral da PMA à fecundação homóloga, ou seja, a que é fruto da junção de gâmetas do próprio casal. Para que essa ajuda médica à fecundidade do casal seja moralmente legítima, ela deve limitar-se a auxiliar a união sexual dos esposos a ser fecunda...

São moralmente ilegítimas todas as práticas de fecundação heteróloga...".

T[t]ive alguma dificuldade em interpretar o que ali estava escrito. Peguei então no Catecismo, onde se pode ler:

"Techniques involving only the married couple (homologous artificial insemination and fertilization) are perhaps less reprehensible, yet remain morally unacceptable. They dissociate the sexual act from the procreative act. The act which brings the child into existence is no longer an act by which two persons give themselves to one another, but one that "entrusts the life and identity of the embryo into the power of doctors and biologists and establishes the domination of technology over the origin and destiny of the human person. ..."Under the moral aspect procreation is deprived of its proper perfection when it is not willed as the fruit of the ... specific act of the spouses' union ...."

Fiquei esclarecido.

Conclusão: tinha já consciência de que não sabia escrever. Concluo agora que também não sei ler.

The Economist Moral blinkers

DECLARAÇÃO DE INTERESSES: Fui assinante do The Economist durante cerca de 12/13 anos (até ao momento, trata-se relação voluntária mais longa da minha vida !). Lia 'religiosamente' o Economist de capa a capa todas as semanas, incluindo a publicidade e os anúncios classificados. Continuei a subscrever a revista até ao momento em que esta manifestou o seu apoio formal a John Kerry nas últimas eleições americanas. Há limites !

"... The Economist prides itself upon "its objective, factual writing, rather than... emotive journalism", but on nearly every important moral issue, the ghost of John Stuart Mill whispers that morality must be dismissed as an inconvenient superstition...

... The Economist regards the person as an autonomous, self-sufficient individual who shapes his own good without reference to society. Furthermore, for The Economist, the market is not a way to achieve the good of society; it is the good of society. Any social policy which introduces a market or makes a market more efficient is to be praised. Any one which does not is to be censured as antiquated and moralistic.

... this is ideological, rather than logical... The plausibility of ... such proposals owes more to a team of brilliant editors than to logic and evidence..."

É preciso levar em consideração que o autor deste artigo ressalva o "vast common sense and analytical clarity of its business and political analysis". Trata-se de uma crítica violenta (e fundamentada) mas limitada à advocacia das "questões fracturantes" feita pela revista.

• Blinded by ideology: The Lancet is pushing a failed strategy to promote "reproductive health"
  
  O Lancet tem publicado durante o mês de Novembro uma série de artigos sobre a "saúde sexual e reprodutiva". A revista defende a promoção da 'educação sexual', do aborto e do preservativo em vez das estratégias baseadas na abstinência e na fidelidade. A Lancet considera que existe um clima hostil em relação à estratégia por si defendida promovido por "forças conservadoras", nomeadamente pela Igreja, que estaria a prejudicar a "saúde reprodutiva" a nível mundial.
  
  No entanto, a análise da Lancet simplesmente não corresponde à realidade (em 2005, a Europa exportou 612 milhões de preservativos para o 3.º mundo), baseia-se em fontes pouco credíveis, não leva em conta um conjunto de evidência científica que coloca em causa as estratégias defendidas, os conflitos de interesse dos autores dos artigos não deveriam ter sido escondidos e os interesses financeiros em presença são ignorados.

Os proponentes da liberalização do aborto têm utilizado argumentos
ilógicos. Têm recorrido à emoção, a estatísticas inexistentes ou a comparações internacionais. Ou seja, procuram mudar de assunto, fugir à questão.

É preciso voltar a centrar o debate naquilo que é essencial:

...human embryology has advanced sufficiently to enable us to dismiss certain fallacies about when a new human life comes to be. We do not doubt the good faith of those who believe that individual life begins at implantation or after the powers of twinning and fusion have passed. But arguments advanced to support these beliefs collapse under scrutiny. We must not let ... obscure our grasp of what those embryos truly are from day 1: namely, nascent members of the human species, worthy of that fundamental respect and protection that justice demands for every member of the human family.

Atheism, not religion, is the real force behind the mass murders of history

Alguns ateus militantes apresentam a religião como a causa de todos os males da humanidade, nomeadamente das guerras e mortandades.

E isto é absoluta verdade. Para chegar a esta conclusão basta:

• Não considerar as guerras e os assassínios em massa perpretados pelos regimes ateus e anti-católicos do séc. XX;
  
• Exagerar o número de vítimas das perseguições religiosas;
  
• Considerar como guerras religiosas determinados conflitos que surgiram por outras razões.

E, por outro lado, para além da mera aritmética do número de vítimas, é preciso não esquecer que:

...if religion sometimes disposes people to self-righteousness and absolutism, it also provides a moral code that condemns the slaughter of innocents. In particular, the moral teachings of Jesus provide no support for - indeed they stand as a stern rebuke to - the historical injustices perpetrated in the name of Christianity.

Pelo contrário, no caso do ateísmo não existe um código moral que impeça excessos. A construção da utopia - esse céu na terra que é a aspiração última dos regimes ateus - torna-se o valor último e, em nome dele, tudo é permitido. A melodia dos amanhãs que cantam é sempre abafada pelos gritos de dor daqueles que são obrigados a estar na plateia a assistir ao espectáculo:

The crimes of atheism have generally been perpetrated through a hubristic ideology that sees man, not God, as the creator of values... man seeks to displace God and create a secular utopia here on earth. Of course if some people - the Jews, the landowners, the unfit, or the handicapped - have to be eliminated in order to achieve this utopia, this is a price the atheist tyrants and their apologists have shown themselves quite willing to pay. Whoever reads in succession a certain number of these reconstructions will realize soon enough that they are rather depictions of the authors and their ideals more than the clarification or disclosure of an image that has become muddled...

...what significance could there be in faith in Jesus Christ, Jesus as the Son of the living God, if Jesus the man was so different from what the evangelists had portrayed and how the Church proclaims Him to be on the basis of the Gospels?

O Dr. Bernard Nathanson foi um dos fundadores, em 1968, da National Association for the Repeal of the Abortion Laws (NARAL), o principal lobby americano pró-aborto.

Esteve directamente envolvido nas campanhas de marketing que levaram à liberalização do aborto nos EUA (Cf. Confession of an ex-abortionist).



O Dr. Nathanson executou 60.000 abortos durante a sua carreira e supervisionou a execução de mais 15.000 abortos. Como o próprio refere:

"Abortei os filhos não nascidos dos meus amigos, colegas, conhecidos e inclusive professores. Cheguei ainda a abortar meu próprio filho".

Graças às suas actividades, ganhou o cognome de "Rei do Aborto".

A partir de 1973, começaram a surgir um conjunto de novas tecnologias - Real-time ultrasound, Electronic fetal heart monitoring, Fetoscopy, Cordocentesis - que permitiram aos médicos observar e investigar o que se passa dentro do útero.

Conta o Dr. Nathanson:

"...como resultado de toda esta tecnologia - ao observar o bébé, ao investigá-lo, ao observar as suas funções metabólicas, ao observar os actos de urinar, engolir, mover-se, dormir, sonhar ... ao tratá-lo, ao operá-lo — concluí, finalmente, que o bébé era meu paciente... e eu devo salvar as vidas dos meus pacientes e não destrui-las. Então alterei a minha opinião sobre o aborto.

Não se tratou de nada de religioso... Isto foi apenas uma mudança de opinião resultante destas fantásticas tecnologias..."

Em 1985, Dr. Nathanson ligou uma máquina de ultra-sons durante um aborto de um feto com 12 semanas. O resultado foi um chocante filme chamado "The Silent Scream" (versão portuguesa).

Vatican reaffirms celibacy for priests

A Vatican summit led by Pope Benedict XVI reaffirmed mandatory celibacy for priests Thursday, rebuffing a high-profile crusade by a married African archbishop who has been excommunicated from the Roman Catholic Church.

In a statement after the three-hour meeting, the Vatican said: "The value of the choice of priestly celibacy, according to Catholic tradition, has been reaffirmed."

In announcing the summit earlier this week, the Vatican said it would examine "the situation created by the disobedience of Monsignor Emmanuel Milingo."

Milingo, of Zambia, incurred automatic excommunication in September when he ordained four married American men as bishops in defiance of the Vatican. He already had drawn the Vatican's ire in 2001, when he took a South Korean woman as his wife in a group wedding ceremony of the Unification Church of the Rev. Sun Myung Moon.

As he steps up his campaign, Milingo is hoping hundreds of married priests will join him in celebrating Mass in a hotel near Newark, N.J., in early December, said one of the married men he ordained, the Rev. George Augustus Stallings Jr., of Washington.

Priests' spouses are also invited to the gathering, Stallings said.

"Unfortunately our prayers were not answered in that our hopes that (the Vatican) would begin to see the way to allow for a married priesthood," Stallings said in a telephone interview.

"We're more determined than ever," Stalling said, insisting that Milingo did not want to "rupture the unity of the church."

When Milingo was excommunicated, several Vatican watchers said the Holy See was worried about the possibility the charismatic archbishop, with the power to ordain bishops and priests, could start a schism.

Milingo sent a letter to Benedict two weeks ago to appeal for openness from the Vatican on married priests, Stallings said.

The Vatican said summit participants were briefed "on the requests to receive dispensation from the obligation of celibacy that have been made in recent years and on the possibility of being readmitted to the exercise of the ministry of priests who now meet the conditions required by the church."

The Vatican's spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi, said that those "conditions" could refer to such situations as a married priest who is now a widower and wants to be readmitted to the exercise of his priestly functions.

The summit yielded "no change in the current discipline" of the church on the celibacy requirement, Lombardi said.

The Vatican did not cite any figures, but there are estimated to be at least 100,000 married priests worldwide, with about 25,000 of them in the United States.

The summit statement also stressed "the need for solid human and Christian training for seminarians as well as already ordained priests."

The Rev. Joseph Fessio, provost of Ave Maria University in Naples, Fla., and editor of Ignatius Press, Benedict's U.S. publisher, said it was to be expected that the summit would reaffirm the celibacy requirement.

Asked if the Vatican's use of the word "value" of celibacy instead of "requirement" in the statement meant a shift on its stance, Fessio said: "I think there is some ambiguity which is probably intended so that the Church's position, which is firm and not going to change, will not appear to be simply an authoritarian response."

Fessio said the statement's style was "characteristic" of Benedict.

"He is very clear, and he is very firm, and he's very gentle and very sensitive," Fessio said.

Proponents of easing the celibacy requirement say it could help ease the shortage of clergy in many parts of the world.

The Vatican requires celibacy of priests ordained under the Latin rite, although married men can become priests in the Eastern rite. The Vatican has also accepted some married Anglican priests who came over to the Catholic fold.

"em duas gerações [s]erá eliminado completamente o catolicismo"

Mas, agora, esta promessa surge associada a uma outra ideia que começa a ganhar estatuto de verdade absoluta:

"Maybe some children need to be protected from indoctrination by their own parents."

Aparentemente, para promover a liberdade... um pouco de fascismo não faz mal a ninguém...

Intolerance: Rock star Elton John's wish to "ban religion completely" may be dismissed as the hyperbole of a famous eccentric. But militant atheism has become more fashionable than ever. And it's targeting your children.

The flashy singer of "Crocodile Rock" and "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road," who recently "married" his longtime male partner, told Britain's Observer Music Monthly that "religion promotes the hatred and spite against gays."

"Organized religion doesn't seem to work," he said. "It turns people into really hateful lemmings and it's not really compassionate." John concluded: "From my point of view, I would ban religion completely."

Religious tolerance is one of our most cherished First Amendment freedoms. So it follows that the idea of government restricting the practice of belief is a nonstarter in places with a deeply ingrained democratic way of life, like the U.S. and Britain. Right? You'd have to go to a communist country to see extremists who call for the forced "end of faith" being taken seriously. Wouldn't you?

Amazon's second-best-selling book at the time of this writing is an Oxford zoologist's venomous 400-page diatribe against "the vice of religion." In it, he insists that "even mild and moderate religion helps to provide the climate of faith in which extremism naturally flourishes." And he wants parents forbidden from raising children by their beliefs.

"Our society," writes Richard Dawkins in "The God Delusion," "has accepted the preposterous idea that it is normal and right to indoctrinate tiny children in the religion of their parents, and to slap religious labels on them — 'Catholic child,' 'Protestant child,' 'Jewish child,' 'Muslim child,' etc." Those "labels" are "always a form of child abuse," said Dawkins, who concludes: "Maybe some children need to be protected from indoctrination by their own parents."

Meanwhile — and this is not a joke — Dawkins has called on the United Nations to extend human rights to gorillas and orangutans. He extols Princeton's notorious "professor of bio-ethics" and animal-lib poster boy Peter Singer, who advocates the killing of handicapped newborn babies, as "the most eloquent advocate of the view that we should move to a 'post-species-ist' condition." And the ever-evangelical Dawkins provides in his book's appendix a list of "friendly addresses, for individuals needing support in escaping from religion."

No. 11 on Amazon is another atheist screed — "Letter to a Christian Nation" by Sam Harris. His epiphany came, he tells the Washington Post, when he took the drug Ecstasy before dropping out of Stanford and "realized that it was possible to be a human being who wished others well all the time, reflexively."

Harris' 2005 attack on religion, "The End of Faith: Religion, Terror and the Future of Reason," got a prestigious award from the PEN literary association and still ranks No. 33 on Amazon. Harris is as eager as Dawkins to kidnap your kids and bring on the day when "the practice of raising our children to believe that they are Christian, Muslim or Jewish be widely recognized as the ludicrous obscenity that it is."

Religious Americans shouldn't be alone in fearing the popularity of these modern Mein Kampfs. Imagine the government forcibly preventing you from inculcating your children with your values and convictions, and substituting its own instead. Even when it's Darwin — instead of Hitler or Mohammed — being worshiped by the state, fascism is fascism.

Surgiu um novo think-tank na Inglaterra cuja missão é

"...to provide alternative perspectives to the orthodoxies of secular culture and impact public opinion about the role faith and belief in society... The word “Theos” and our descriptor, “the public theology think tank”, reflect our overall aim of putting God “back” into the public domain.

... Our perspective is that faith is not just important for human flourishing and the renewal of society, but that society can only truly flourish if faith is given the space to do so.

O trabalho deste novo think-tank é apoiado pelo primaz anglicano e pelo Cardeal Cormac Murphy-O’Connor (a propósito, comparem-se as fotografias dos dois e retirem-se as conclusões apropriadas - mas sem julgar ninguém, é claro...)

Os Olhos Azuis da minha irmã

"No último Prós e Contras, a eurodeputada Edite Estrela considerou que o aborto poderia ser legítimo, caso a mãe descobrisse que a criança era portadora de trissomia 21.

Eu tenho uma irmã com olhos azuis. Chama-se Mónica, tem 22 anos e tirou o curso profissional de Serviços Básicos de Hospitalidade.

Trabalha hoje numa pastelaria de Lisboa. Os olhos dela são lindos e ela é educada, feminina, anda sempre perfumada...

A Mónica é a minha irmã e irmã de mais três. Gostamos muito dela e ela é muito feliz. Dá unidade à família, está atenta sempre a todos e a cada um.

A sra. eurodeputada não tem os olhos azuis mas tem uns olhos tão bonitos como os da Mónica. Tem os talentos e as virtudes de avó e de mãe. E tem dificuldades; certamente também chora e se alegra, é mais uma das pessoas deste nosso planeta que acorda todas as manhãs e lava os dentes.

De certeza que já viu um pobre na rua e lhe estendeu a mão direita (a esquerda) ou as duas, ou olhou para uma prostituta e sentiu pena. De certeza que já ajudou alguém em apuros.

Gostávamos que viesse a nossa casa, provasse os muffins que a Mónica faz e visse o gosto com que ela põe a mesa. E descobrisse que esta menina de olhos azuis tem... trissomia 21.

E ficaria bem contente por ela ter nascido. Tal como nós. Tal como qualquer pessoa.
